Shapeways, an online co-creation community, have come out with the PhotoShaper. It is a free online application that turns digital photographs into incredible 3D printable objects. After you upload a photograph, PhotoShaper immediately creates a depth-layered 3D object based on the contrast of the picture.

Shapeways then can output that object using the latest in 3D printing technology (Rapid Prototyping). You can try out the Shapeways PhotoShaper at www.shapeways.com/creator/photoshaper.
