An In-Depth Look At The Leica X1

Today, we’ll take a look at a new digital camera called the Leica X1. It has 12.2 mega-pixels, a 24mm f/2.8 lens, a 2.7 inch LCD screen and an APS-C sized, 23.6×15.8mm CMOS sensor with a 3:2 aspect ratio. This camera is equipped with a full set of advanced controls ranging from manual exposure to manual focus on a four-way navigational pad and 34 total options are available. The Leica X1 also features a sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, top shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second, JPEG and DNG RAW file compatibility, and a continuous shooting rate of up to 3 frames per second. The device has a fixed 36mm focal range and 230,000 pixel resolution as well.

Furthermore, the Leica X1 is a relatively small, compact camera, making it ideal for traveling. It’s measured at 124(W)×32(H)×59.5(D) mm and weighs 286g, so it can easily be stored in a coat pocket or a little camera bag. But the camera will be less travel-friendly if you choose to add the optional optical viewfinder or handgrip that’s available for it.

However, compared to other DSLRs, this camera has a slower processing speed for handling images, especially with RAW files. The Leica X1 will take two seconds to store its first image, additional pictures will take longer still and the camera can’t take more photos while it’s processing images. As a result, the device will lock up for at least one second while being used in JPEG mode at full-size. It also has a slow auto focus system, making it inadequate for taking moving shots.

In addition to this, The APS-C sensor and the maximum aperture of F/2.8 allows you to blur backgrounds and capture sharper pictures in low-light without the need for a tripod. The camera also has a pop-up flash but you can also add on an optional SF24D or SF58 unit to the external hotshoe if you want greater flash power and there’s an optional 36 mm Bright Line Viewfinder too. The Leica X1 has three metering modes, known as Evaluative Metering, Center Weighted Average Metering and Spot Metering as well. The camera is also compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards and its battery life allows for about 250 shots. The company is even offering Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as a free download if you buy the Leica X1, which is recommended for retail at $1,995.
