BIDI screen from MIT Media Lab

I realize that we are a long way away from 3-D photography, but it is nice to know that some guys at the MIT Media Lab are ready with a new type of interface known as BiDi. This Bidirectional Screen enables the user to manipulate objects in a 3-D world through gestures, without using a special glove or anything.

I suppose this is perfect for manipulating holograms, not that we have that Star Wars technology now. Of course, you may notice the TIE Fighters being manipulated there in the picture. Now that’s what I call an homage.
There is a video of this tech in action after the jump. It goes into more technical detail too.
