British Camera Vandals Condemned–Town Raising Money For New Camera

Well, if this isn’t either one of the most amazing or most terrifying camera-based news stories I’ve ever brought you then I’m not sure what is.  Seriously, this is nuts.  Pure-t nuts.

See, remember when I told you about the speed camera in England that got necklaced?  As in someone set a tire around it, filled the tire with gasoline and lit it?  Well, apparently, the widow of a man who was killed in a traffic accident on that corner is speaking out and she’s not happy.  This is what she said to the BBC:

“Although there are 30mph signs…no-one takes any notice. We know speed cameras are not liked but at least they help slow motorists down. The destruction of the camera is extremely upsetting. It might be a money spinner but at least people slow down when they approach the camera. My husband was killed instantly by a car overtaking another car and a HGV. I was at the scene and wouldn’t want anyone to suffer the trauma I have. I’m really determined my husband shouldn’t die in vain.”

So she’s gone on a private fundraising tour to replace the ninety thousand pound sterling camera, and has generated about twenty three thousand so far.

I don’t know whether to be amazed that she’s willing to go this far to help people or horrified that she’s been so snowed by a nanny-state run amok that she’s willing to PAY for her own surveillance.  Surely they could just station a cop with a radar gun near the corner, to exercise a little discretion, instead of going with cameras?
