Broadcom’s New Chip Makes 1080p Cell Phone Cameras Possible

I know, the headline kind of says it all, but it’s still rather exciting news all the same.  Cell phone cameras aren’t exactly the most powerful tools in the photographer’s arsenal.  In fact, they’re kind of minimalist.  They have to be; after all, they’re sharing not very much space with a whole lot of other gear–after all, when’s the last time you saw a ten megapixel camera that could send and receive phone calls and text messages.  Versatility often places demands on quality.

But now, thanks to Broadcom’s recent development, improved cell phone cameras may be only a few short months away.

This chip, you see, allows “full 1080p video recording and playback, as well as 20 megapixel stills with face / smile detection and image stabilization.”  This, basically, allows a cell phone camera to work in 1080p.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing high-def cell phone cameras, and I’ll bet you are too.
