Canon SD1400 Digital Camera Review–Slim on Bargain, Long on Power

Once again, Canon brings in another in its surprisingly powerful line of cameras with the Canon SD1400, but for all the power the camera possesses, it’s pretty weak as a deal.  Read on.

The Canon SD1400 is a fourteen megapixel camera with a 4x optical zoom (and a matching 4x digital zoom), a 2.7 inch LCD display, DIGIC 4 image processor, optical image stabilizer, image stabilizer, a variety of shooting modes, a “smart auto” mode that will, essentially, analyze your environment and determine the proper settings from there, through-the-lens autofocus, a burst shooting mode for action shots, white balance controls and photo effects, a built-in auto flash, direct printing and support for a variety of memory cards including Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard formats.

The interesting thing about the Canon SD1400 is that it packs all of this into a shockingly small package.  This little fella is NOT very cumbersome at all, but it’s offering terrific resolution, a longer range than normal AND a variety of tools in one package.  I’m dismayed, however, by the lack of onboard memory on this which forces you to use a memory card, and doubly so at the price they’re asking.  Two hundred and fifty bucks for this thing at Best Buy and they can’t include at least a few megs of onboard memory?  They could at LEAST include a memory card with it, for crying out loud.

But still, the Canon SD1400 is not a bad camera, even if it isn’t exactly bargain hunter friendly.
