Casio Exilim EX-S5BK Camera Review–A Great Low End Value

I don’t see many Casio Exilims floating around, so when I get the chance to try one I’m always a little surprised by it.  While there are often some problems, there’s also a lot to like and they generally offer at a great value.  So today, I’m tackling the Casio Exilim EX-S5BK.

The Casio Exilim EX-S5BK is a ten megapixel camera that offers 3x optical zoom with augmenting 4x digital zoom, a 2.7 inch LCD monitor, face detection, auto focus, white balance modes, selectable flash modes, the ability to record AVI videos, 17.8 megs of onboard memory (seriously, 17.8.  Oddest amount I’ve ever seen!) and compatibility with Secure Digital memory cards, a YouTube video mode, direct printing, and a USB port.

You can see immediately that this model doesn’t have a lot of the options that many others have, and the zoom isn’t as short as some models (I’ve seen 2x zoom more than once on a compact digital camera), but the camera itself works fairly well, and turns out what looks to me like a decent if somewhat low-res photo.  But here’s the kicker–Best Buy will sell you one of these for just a hundred bucks.  That’s a pretty good price on a camera, even if it doesn’t have too much in the way of bells and whistles.

The Casio EXILIM EX-S5BK isn’t going to be the world’s next big camera, but it should do the job and do so without breaking the bank.
