Casio’s Hybrid GPS Camera Knows Where You Live
I know–it’s kind of creepy, isn’t it? Sounds like the introduction to some bad science fiction, even. But I assure you it is true, no matter how lunatic it sounds.
Here’s the basic rundown: Casio took an old Exilim EX-H10 and fiddled around with the guts a bit and produced a camera with GPS, thanks in large part to a part called the accelerometer. An accelerometer, basically, is responsible for telling a camera which way is up. This allows for auto-rotation of images, stabilized images, and even some help with exposure.
Since the camera almost never sees the satellite–being as you’re often indoors and such taking pictures–the accelerometer kicks in to help the GPS make a guess as to where it is. Then the GPS can extrapolate based on where it last contacted the satellite and make an inference from there.
So it’s true–your camera now knows where you live. And where your girlfriend lives, or anyone else you’ve taken a picture of lately as long as you took it at their house.
