Cell Phone As Broadcast Camera? Just Ask Qik.

It may well be the start of something big, but for Qik (pronounced “quick”), people using their cell phones as broadcast cameras is very much today.

Qik produces software that allows cell phones to broadcast live video to the internet.

Granted, right now, this is pretty much an excuse for people to generate still more of the absolute worst video EVER–one such Qik video is an extended shot of the milk aisle of a grocery store in Greece–but just because that’s where it is today doesn’t mean that’s where it will be tomorrow.

Personally, I think this is an amazing idea.  Picture a news network comprised of camera phones that can broadcast in live video.  The only difference is you don’t watch it on TV, you watch it on your computer.  Say, even, your home theater PC.  Every night at six o clock, the cell phone camera brigade brings you all the latest news from your corner of the world.

That’s a heady thought.

So for the time being, let’s suffer bad internet video with a smile, because this is where it is today.  Tomorrow?  Who knows?
