Defective Nikon D5000 Cameras Shipped

If there is one thing that a company would hate is to issues advisories on some defect for their product. And while they are left with very little choice, such seems to be the case for Nikon when it discovered some defective units which unfortunately are already in the consumers hands.

The defect? It has to do something in the operation of the camera. Can you imagine a camera that cannot be used when powered on even on a fully charged battery? It seems that the problem is in the power area of the Nikon D5000 DSLR cameras but for some serial numbers only. That list will of affected Nikon D5000 serial numbers will be released on July 23 by Nikon.

Preparations are under way at a special Nikon repair facility to streamline the processes associated to the solution and Nikon will be equipped to correct D5000 cameras at this facility, beginning July 23, 2009. Service related to this issue, including the cost of shipping affected D5000 cameras to Nikon, as well as their return to customers, will be free of charge. To further minimize customer inconvenience, Nikon will return serviced cameras to customers promptly, employing (whenever possible) transportation that limits transit time to two days.

Tip your hat off to Nikon for taking the initiative. But as far as the camera is concerned, it is not a good way to enter the market. For one, that stinging setback will be carried over for years to come as it is associated with the Nikon D5000 or may even be a cause to affect the sales for it.
