Dougherty County Cops Use Spycams On Duty

Next time you’re in Dougherty County in Georgia, watch out–the cops down there carry special tools.

I’m not talking about their guns or their tasers or anything like that.  The cops in Dougherty County all carry spycams.

So far, the cops are enamored with these little devices.  They’ve cost less than a hundred bucks each and have already proven one cop not guilty of a particular charge.  These small cameras clip to a shirt pocket, much like any of the spycams we’ve written about right here (but not the one pictured at right–that’s just a representative spycam), and provide both an audio and a visual record of every conversation a cop has.

Of course, one wonders how the cops get around the “you must consent to be recorded” laws on the books (which may not be applicable down in Georgia) or what happens when the video proves a cop’s been acting improperly (whoopsie doodle…I done run over my spycam!).  But still, this is a pretty good idea, and should go a long way toward helping both sides, assuming there’s no impropriety involved here.
