DSLR Accessories Market Booming

Apparently one of the biggest trends in photography is not necessarily the camera itself.  A lot of different people are starting to take a look at the DSLR camera to provide impressive professional quality images–even the director of photography for Saturday Night Live wanted a new look for the opening credit roll, and went the DSLR route.

But what a lot of DSLR owners are discovering is that there are a lot of problems with their cameras–not so much issues of quality so much as issues of use.  And these are being solved not by improvements to the cameras themselves, but by add-ons to existing cameras.

For instance, DSLRs have been said to have a problem with shaky images at long ranges.  They’re somewhat lighter weight than normal video cameras, so the shakes really show up.  The solution?  Not internal image stabilizers, but optional “steady rigs” that mount on your shoulder.  Lesser quality audio is solved by adding on external microphones, and similar problems are solved similarly.

I’m not sure I approve of having to buy a slew of add-ons rather than get an improved camera, but it sure seems to be working for most people who buy DSLRs, so why kvetch about what works?
