It doesn’t seem to be a good time for any company dealing exclusively with cameras due to the emergence of high powered cameras included within smartphones. We’ve already seen Kodak file for bankruptcy protection and it seems that Canon may be in trouble as well. Earnings reports were recently released for the company and it seems that their growth was less than stellar when compared to what was expected out of the company. Due to this, it seems that the company’s president Tuneji Uchida will be resigning from the company effective March 29th.

Lets’ hope these companies will be able to make a turn around and return to greatness.

If you’re any kind of photography enthusiast chances are you’ve either used Photoshop and most likely have it in your arsenal of photograph manipulating tools. You’re also most likely aware of the fact that Adobe’s Creative Suite has largely become the de facto software bundle for creative minds across the board – a point photographers, videographers, graphic designers, web designers and the like will surely agree on.

While Creative Suite 6 is on its way, many are still running earlier versions with no desire to upgrade. Considering the fact that upgrading costs several hundred dollars for features that may not benefit your normal work flow, this isn’t much of a surprise. Regardless of whether or not you plan on upgrading, the option to upgrade is always nice. Unfortunately Adobe recently changed their pricing scheme canning the discounted upgrade price in the process for those who don’t currently own the latest Creative Suite release.

Unsurprisingly, this caused quite an uproar within the community as Adobe hasn’t done such a thing in the past. Luckily, Adobe has listened to the cries of community members changing their plans today and announcing that Adobe Creative Suite 3 and 4 owners will be able to upgrade to Creative Suite 6 for the discounted price through December 31st, 2012.

Of course, when exactly Creative Suite 6 will be out is anyone’s guess but the company has said they are planning yearly releases so it should be right around the corner. Stay tuned.

Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U, will be getting an app store, and not just games will be available for the Wii U and its tablet controller: the console will apparently also support non-gaming apps. Which begs the question: will we see some kind of photo apps for the Wii U? The possibilities are huge, considering that it has a touchscreen controller with a built-in camera. We’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo introduces at E3, when the Wii U is fully unveiled. The console is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2012, just in time for the holiday shopping season.

If you’re a photographer enthusiast with an iPhone you’ve most likely heard of Instagram. If not, Instagram is a free application available for iOS powered devices that allow users to apply different artistic filters to their photographs and then upload them to the Internet for all to see.

Seeing how the application has become so popular over the years it’s quite strange that we’ve yet to see it make its way to Android. Luckily, a top Instagram executive has recently stepped froth to let us know that the app is in fact on its way but failed to give us any solid time frame.

If you’re an Android user, what app have you been using for filters?

One of the greatest things about digital cameras is the fact that the software by which they are run can be updated. This means that following their release it’s quite possible that they will continuously get more sophisticated and feature packed than ever before.

If you’re the proud owner of either an SLT-A77 or SLT-A65 from Sony, you’re in for just that kind of treat. It was just made known a few days ago that firmware version 1.04 is now available for both of these models. But, before you get too excited, make note that this firmware update focuses heavily on improved stability and usability rather than adding in a ton of new features. Of course, given its incremental version number, this is to be expected.

Anyways, those who install firmware version 1.04 can expect to see the camera’s response time, picture quality and overall usability improve. What exactly overall usability improvement means we aren’t sure but we can only assume the software has been further optimized for speedier use. Past this Sony has also added in support for the following lenses:

  • Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA (SAL1680Z)
  • DT 16-105mm F3.5-5.6 (SAL16105)
As always, you can head over to Sony’s website to grab the firmware update for the SLT-A77 here and the SLT-A65 here.

As you’re sure to know the world has been expericing a chain of natural disasters as of late. Aside from the desctruction these disasters have brought into the lives of many innocent people it has also taken quite the toll on many different industires. For example, Nikon announed that they would be forced to cease DSLR production due to flooding in Thailand. Not only will this make it harder to acquire a DSLR camera but it will also cause Nikon to lose a large sum of money on top of what they must pay in repairs.

Luckily, Nikon is pushing through the disaster announcing today that DSLR producing is slowly ramping up once again. While they are pushing out new units, they made it a point to tell us that they don’t expect production to be back up to 100% until sometime next year. Regardless, it’s nice to see that the company has made it through these tough times.
