Got a Cold? Don’t Spread it Around!


It’s almost winter and viruses are out there on the loose. Got a cold? Watch out how and when you sneeze. You’ll end up sharing your cold with anyone in the room.

Check the picture above. Virus expert Julian Tay and Gary Settles, Pennsylvania State University engineering professor have found a way to take a picture of a cough. You need a Schlieren photography. That’s a photo of the flow of fluid and it’s generally used to check the aerodynamics of cars in air tunnels. You also need precision optics, a curved mirror, a razor blade and some free time.

So what did we learn from the picture above? Besides covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, we know that modern photography can sure take great photos. I wonder what the future will bring…
