Hasselblad Went To the Moon, But Nikon’s Taking the New Millennium
Yes, it’s true–Hasselblad was the camera that went to the moon, but when the time came for NASA to place a new order of camera gear, where did they turn? Not back to Hasselblad, but to Nikon.
NASA just ordered eleven new Nikon D3s DSLRs, along with AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses. They plan to put these cameras on board the International Space Station for taking photos of all the various projects going on in and around the place on any given day.
What’s particularly interesting about the whole situation is that these particular Nikons are “stock”, or, can be purchased at any store that happens to carry them. They’re the exact same camera you can get your hands on–no custom hardware, no NASA-only features. Nothing to differentiate them from any other Nikon D3s on the market.
So here’s to Nikon for becoming the new official camera of space!
