Imax Plans To Release Own Brand of 3D Digital Camera
It was probably a good idea for Imax to make this decision, really–with so many films planning to film in 3-D, and many of those also looking to make an appearance on massive Imax screens, it really was only a matter of time before Imax decided to develop its own proprietary camera to go along with its own screens.
The prototype should be done later this year, and will be a boon to studios, as the current process of making an Imax film requires huge amounts of film stock. Going all digital, Imax says, will lower costs considerably. Dig the word straight from Imax:
“Given the significant amount of 3D content being developed over the past 12-18 months, requests from filmmakers for an Imax 3D digital camera, consumer appetite for the Imax experience and this week’s joint venture announcement for the 3D television network, we believe the timing of this initiative could not be better,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax filmed entertainment.
This makes more than a little sense–since it seems that the 3D gimmick isn’t so much of a gimmick after all, an Imax specific camera is probably a good idea.
