Insignia NS-DV720P Camcorder Review–Low End But High Value
I can’t remember the last time I tackled an Insignia camcorder. Really, I can’t. A deep record search says it was back in April. But I’m actually rather surprised by the one I got my hands on to tell you about to end the week on, the Insignia NS-DV720P.
The Insignia NS-DV720P camcorder offers a 3x digital zoom, a three inch LCD display, five megapixel resolution, digital image stabilization, night shooting capability, ninety megs of onboard memory with Secure Digital card compatibility, USB interface, editing software, a carrying pouch, and an Energy Star compliant power adapter.
There’s not much to this camcorder. It’s very simple. Almost painfully simple, in fact. The zoom has a short range and the picture quality looks pretty mediocre (five megapixel is really more like good cell phone quality), but you can’t deny the sheer value this represents. Best Buy is selling these at eighty bucks a pop, though that is a sale price.
Thus, the Insignia NS-DV720P camcorder is a low end camcorder that brings a lot of value with it by virtue of its spectacularly low pricing. If you need a powerful camcorder with lots of options, this isn’t going to be it. But if you just need something simple to take basic videos, you’ll do well to start looking here.

The so called "mediocre" video image quality is not because of the 5-Megapixel image sensor. Actually that is more than enough for a 720p camcorder even in a higher price range. The limitation is the high compression/low bandwidth which is around 3.8Mbit/sec at 720p. So if you have many things moving around in your video the compression artifacts will be very visible.
I own this camcorder along other semipro SD and HD cameras, and I think for $99 (at bestbuy) you can't go wrong with it.
