Insignia NSDV1080P Camcorder Review–Still Deeply Flawed

You might remember my earlier coverage of the Insignia NSDV720P, and if you do, it’s a good thing, because you won’t be at all surprised by my coverage of the Insignia NSDV1080P.  The two, as it turns out, are shockingly similar in terms of performance.

The Insignia NSDV1080P is a five megapixel camcorder that offers a three inch LCD screen, 4x digital zoom, image stabilization, low-light recording capability, ninety megs of onboard memory with support for SD and SDHC memory cards, a USB port, editing software and a carrying pouch.

You can see that, on the surface, about the only difference between this and the earlier NSDV is that the 1080p shoots its video in exactly that.  And indeed, going in for a closer look reveals that the two perform about the same, which is to say, poorly.  The zoom is frustratingly short, the video is blurry at full zoom, and in all honesty, there are plenty of smaller camcorders out there that perform vastly better than this one ever could.

And just to add insult to injury, the NSDV1080P is selling for a hundred and fifty bucks, which isn’t so much less than much better quality camcorders.

All things considered, I’d stay away from the Insignia NSDV1080P which can’t do the job of a regular camcorder for about as much money as a regular camera.
