Kodak and Samsung Settle Patent Battle
And the winner? Kodak.
Seems that not too long ago, Kodak filed suits against both Samsung and LG alleging patent violations, specifically relating to the cameras found in both companies’ line of mobile phones. LG decided to settle fairly quickly. Samsung, on the other hand, fought back…at least for a while.
The terms of the settlement between Kodak and Samsung are, meanwhile, pretty interesting. Samsung will of course pay royalties, just how many is as yet unknown, but there are definitely some involved. What’s really interesting about this is that the two companies now have the right to access each other’s patent portfolios.
This basically amounts to a strategic alliance. They’re going to be swapping patents back and forth like so many baseball cards. What will the two manage to create with free access to each others’ patents? Who knows–but one thing’s for sure, this is going to be just amazing to watch.
