LAPD Patrol Car Camera Plan Hits Snag
So possibly in an effort to improve its badly tarnished public image–so badly tarnished they actually mock them on Family Guy, for crying out loud–the LAPD contracted to put a whole slew of cameras in their patrol cars so they can have a constant visual reference of what they’re doing and who they’re doing it to.
Fully two years after funding was approved and contracts were signed, however, the cars still don’t have cameras. Why, you ask? Apparently the big holdup is that they don’t know if the cameras are of sufficient resolution to be admissible as evidence in court. The Information Technology Bureau of the LAPD has apparently called for help from IBM, but that help is slow in coming.
Now, the best part about this story is that cameras in patrol cars were recommended back in 1991 following the beating of motorist Rodney King, and you’d figure that the resolution of a Hello Kitty camera would be far greater than anything available back in 1991.
So until IBM gets to Los Angeles and helps out, guess LA motorists better carry their camcorders around. Did we mention JVC has a new one yet?
