Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC lens Review

Sigma18200main.jpgCamera lab got their hands on the Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC lens and did a review of this lens which is compatible with DSRLs from companies like Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Konica Minolta. The lens scores on points like versatile 11.1x zoom range, its price tag, its small size and Polariser-friendly internal focusing. However what they didn’t dig was the lack of anti-shake feature and thought that the Nikkkor zoom lens are built better and are optically faster.

The Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC lens was launched in February 2005 and is a full on 11.1x zoom lens which is compatible with cameras from Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Konica Minolta. It delivers 35mm equivalent focal range of 27-300mm however on a Canon DSLR it is capable of delivering 35mm equivalent range of 29-320mm. This lens is not compatible with Film cameras and consists of 15 elements in 13 groups with two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and two hybrid aspherical lenses. The lens also includes internal focusing and includes a lens hood.

The review concludes by saying “Delivering a focal range equivalent to 27-300mm, the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC is a highly versatile lens. Its massive 11.1x zoom range allows you to capture both wide landscape shots and decent close-ups of distant subjects such as wildlife without worrying about carrying additional lenses. Unsurprisingly a lens with this kind of focal range is rarely going to perform as well as one with a shorter range, but we were impressed overall by the results possible. Certainly unless you're into extreme wide or telephoto work, or demand the ultimate quality, you could really be very happy with one of these lenses. Indeed many photographers could fit one and never take it off again - and that's not only highly convenient but also greatly reduces the potential for dust to enter the camera body”.
