Los Angeles Finds Jackpot–Red Light Camera Revenue!
Well surprise surprise sur-priiiise, as one marine private Gomer Pyle once was known to remark. Apparently Los Angeles found the pot of gold at the end of their rainbow! The thing about this is, the rainbow in question is all red and it’s got a traffic camera mounted to the top of it.
Monthly income from traffic cameras has doubled since late 2007, from two hundred thousand a month to four hundred thousand. Is it because the cameras are catching more scofflaws? Is it because people are driving less safely? No, nothing so complex, I’m afraid–they just doubled the fines.
Well, what a shocker. They double the fines and suddenly they get double the revenue?
See, there’s this thing called the California Stop, in which you make a rolling right turn through a red light. Well, Los Angeles used to call this its own offense, and charge accordingly. But then they decided to call it the same thing as “running a red light”, and thus, the cost of the penalty doubled.
I’m sure that now, Los Angeles citizens sleep much safer at night, knowing that the cameras are constantly on watch for INCOMPLETE STOPS. How many murders went unsolved last year there again?
