Lunar Orbiter Beams Back Pictures
On June 18th, NASA sent two tandem spacecraft into the orbit of the moon to take photos of the craters there. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter started sending back images just last week. The images are beautiful, crisp photos of the surface area located just east of Hell E crater, where the day-night line is located.
To deliver such shots, the cameras were specifically designed. The camera system on board features a wide angle camera alongside two narrow angle cameras. The narrow cameras are able to capture some of the smallest objects ever found on the surface, even those as small as 20 inches across. The orbiter will eventually be circling the moon at 31 miles away from the surface.
