Mamiya Is Seventy Today
Mamiya is currently celebrating in Germany due to the coming of their seventieth anniversary. So, they’re offering a promotional deal on the Mamiya 7 II medium-format rangefinder camera. Of course, Mamiya has been around since 1940 and their fame began with the development of the Mamiya 6 medium-format folding camera. The creation of this device introduced us to film-plane focusing, which means the film plane moves while the bellows and the lens did not when focusing.
In 1948, Mamiya released their first Twin-Lens Reflex (TLR) camera and entered the 35mm market the following year. After the first half of the twentieth century, the company presented us with many breakthroughs in camera technology. Some of these developments include the Magazine 35 interchangeable film backs camera, the Mamiya Press camera, the Mamiyaflex C TLR interchangeable lenses series and the RB67 Professional rotating back SLR. Then they reused the Mamiya 6 name in 1989 with the launch of a new medium-format rangefinder camera featuring interchangeable lenses, which was later succeeded by the Mamiya 7 and 7 II.
Later on, Mamiya introduced their AF system in 1999 before they went digital in 2006 with the release of the Mamiya ZD self-contained digital medium-format SLR. More recently, Phase One forged a business relationship with Mamiya, getting involved with strategic leadership in R&D, marketing and ditribution management. Thus, the two business entities have developed cameras such as the Mamiya 645DF and Phase One 645DF and collaborated with the Schneider Group to produce a series of optical lenses and other devices.
