Tiny 3-D cameras’ reach is beyond Tethered Cameras

logo_fraunhofer_l.gif
Recently, a team of German scientists said that a new generation of tiny and cordless 3-D cameras can go places where the present tethered cameras cannot reach. The cameras of the present age that are used for deep-sea research or earthquake rubble rescue work can have a limited access due to cables that tend to snag on debris.

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany have brought out a revolutionary series of dual-lens cameras. With a size of a cereal box weighing around 1 kilo, these cameras are capable of sending radio 3-D images back to a centralized base.

"It consists of two cameras with a projector in the centre," said Gunther Notni, chief of Fraunhofer Institute's optics department. "The two cameras provide a three-dimensional view, rather like two eyes. The projector casts a pattern of stripes on the objects. The geometry of the measured object can be deduced from the deformation of the stripes."

The optical 3-D scan system used in these cameras delivers increased speed for the measuring process. Not only this, since its surface doesn’t touch the scanner, it receives no scratches. Moreover, using the aid of the data obtained, it can immediately correct the process.

A well-known optics manufacturer is at present testing the technology used in these 3-D cameras for measuring particularly lens systems tapping light from LEDs. The marketing of this new method has already begun several months ago by the IVB GmbH.

Stanford Camera Chip Sees Things in 3D

Stanford%20camera%20chip.png

We just might be on the verge of a new and very, very exciting digital photography technology. While the normal 3-megapixel sensor would see things in a flat 2D image, this new technology does not. Developers of this technology, Keith Fife and colleagues, call this the multi-aperture image sensor. Compared to normal digital cameras which takes pics in a flat 2D image, using this technology, the pic taken is divided into 16x16 pixel squares called subarrays. These subarrays are slightly overlapping. Each subarray has its own lens for viewing (thus, multi-aperture). An image processing software analyzes distances afterwards. Which means that using the multi-aperture image sensor technology, will be able to capture the depth of images, and hence, produce 3D pictures (when technology is fully-developed). If and when it becomes a staple in digital camera, it will surely change the way we see photography.

Asia Optical Projects Shipment of 1 million 12x Optical Zoom Camera in 2008

Looks like the growth of digital cameras is unstoppable. You should have realized that the moment Polaroid decided to discontinue production of Polaroid instant films. According to Asia Optical, one of the four leading CCM and ODM/OEM digital camera makes in Taiwan, the company is expecting to ship around one million 12x optical zoom digital cameras above 10-megapixels on 2008.

Robert Lai, company chairman of Asia Optical says:

Retail prices for entry-level digital cameras – 7-megapixel and 3x optical zoom lens – will drop to around US$99 in March-April 2008, pushing ODM/OEM prices down to US$50-60. Such ODM/OEM prices are intolerable to self-producing Japan-based vendors and therefore they will be forced to release more orders to Taiwan-based makers who can still support small ODM/OEM margins of US$2-3 on prices up to US$55.

Another projection would be that 2-5 megapixel cameras would increase in volume and these cameras would always be equipped with Auto-focus. If what was said would happen, expect a flurry of low-cost digital cameras to soon hit the markets.

Printing Through SD card 2.5 times Faster on Photosmart A626

LyraCompactPhotoPrinterspeedSM.jpg

Lyra Research, the digital imaging authority, in partnership with CompuMetric Labs revealed the results of the recently conducted analysis called Snapshot Photo Printer Performance. The observation included testing of the Canon PIXMA mini320, the Epson PictureMate PM260 and the HP Photosmart A626 with new metrics.

Ann Priede, managing editor of The Hard Copy Observer, states, "In order to gauge the true performance of a compact photo printer, evaluators must measure the performance across all channels -- printing from just a PC, which is the most common method of measuring performance, does not provide an accurate picture."

The report tested photo display and print times from memory cards, PC, PictBridge and mobile devices using Bluetooth technology. The testing team confirmed that using an SD card for printing is 2.5 times faster than using Bluetooth on the HP Photosmart A626. The report advises to follow new metrics to check the performance of related devices with respect to displaying and printing through multiple media, direct-connect input channels.
