SanDisk Preparing Read Only Memory Card
SanDisk is coming up with a new cheap read-only memory card, designed to store photos for 100 years and which uses "3D memory". Still in the testing stage, the cards once full cannot be edited, which means even data can't be deleted and hence SanDisk calls it the new "new digital film".
"The reason we didn't do it in part [previously] is that we did not have enough memory to do it; now we do, and we are going to do it very aggressively," Greg Rhine, who heads SanDisk's consumer business, said of the global expansion.
"It eliminates the computer from the equation," Rhine said. "It doesn't need the computer for usage. You shoot it once, develop it, and then store it. It's permanently stored on the card, and not rewriteable."
