Nikon D3S: A Rundown Of The New DSLR’s Capabilities
Back in October, we informed you about the information leak concerning the Nikon D3S. Since the new DSLR’s official announcement, Nikon has claimed that it will be a new standard among other digital single-lens reflexive cameras in offering superior low-light ability and incredible performance speed. So, you’re probably wondering what to expect from this Nikon camera. Well, here’s the rundown you’ve been waiting for.
First of all, the Nikon D3S is actually designed to capture images in dark places. Its ISO range goes from 200 to 12,800, which is better than most DSLRs. Even in uneven lighting, this camera can take high quality photographs without the need of compensating with a flash. Next, the D3S can record video but its maximum range is 720p, which is a lower resolution than you’ll find on some of the other cameras out there. However, it features “Handheld” mode and “Tripod” mode. In Handheld mode, you can take moving shots in video while Tripod mode allows you to go completely manual with the camera for the best results in using the video function. Apparently, video capability is limited since footage clips max out at five minutes, though.
Furthermore, the D3S is also equipped with 24-70 f/2.8 with quick shots. However, Engagdet reports that it’s not good for stealth photography since the camera is easy to spot in a crowd. The device doesn’t allow the user to directly select every desirable setting on the rear LCD. Instead, you have to master the system of icons, control names and menu locations to modify camera settings.
Lastly, the D3S has a 12.1 mega-pixel sensor but does not carry a 1080p video mode and it lacks internal wireless flash support as well. Nonetheless, Engadget considers it to be “the ultimate field camera” although they strongly feel that it needs better video features. Currently, the Nikon D3S is not available for retail but it is priced at $5,200. So, it’s a camera probably to be coveted more by professionals than amateur photographers.
