Phase One: Probably One Of The Most Expensive Cameras Ever
If you were to ask people on the street randomly about the highest camera prices out there, you’d probably get answers in the $300 range. However, that price range is for digital single-lens reflexive cameras in the consumer market. But have you ever considered what the medium-format camera costs or even heard of such a camera? Unlike the DSLR, the medium-format camera is advanced equipment for serious professional photographers like those who work in the fashion industry. Meanwhile, DSLRs are popular among amateurs and beginners. Therefore, medium-format cameras are far more expensive. For example, you’d have to pay ten times the price of a regular DSLR to buy a Phase One camera.
Phase One is a company from Copenhagen that specializes in medium-format cameras. Furthermore, the medium-format camera is more powerful than a DSLR. Medium-format devices use large film or image sensors measured at 53.9×40.4mm while even high quality DSLRs have sensors no bigger than 36x24mm. Medium-format cameras are equipped to produce larger, high quality images with sharper detail and can record more levels of color brightness for each pixel. Currently, Phase One’s best cameras are the 645AF and the 645DF.
These medium-format cameras each come with an attachable image sensor and about three different lenses. For these devices, the sensor alone costs $4000 and the whole camera is priced at a total of at least $54,860. That’s a lot more than you’ll ever pay for a DSLR camera.
Now, let’s discuss how these cameras actually work. First of all, lenses are placed on the front of the device and they’re designed to shed light on the large, image sensor, has a greater focal range and wider field of view than a DSLR. Next, the body of the camera is equipped with metering for the right exposure level, auto focus and controls that run camera settings like shutter speed and aperture. Finally, there’s the back of the device where the sensor, the display and the controls for setting ISO and reviewing shots are located. As previously stated, these cameras are advanced equipment for real professionals and they’re very expensive. Nevertheless, these camera are worth the price since they’re made to produce better images than you’d ever get with a DSLR.
