Photographer Mark Oristano Recreates 1930’s Classic Portraits
By taking modern photographic technology back to the 1930’s, Dallas photographer Mark Oristano has created a fantastic look with his Classic Hollywood Black-and-White portraits. Oristano uses old-time lights, an antique camera, and old-time techniques to create beautiful portraits and evocative photos similar to great Hollywood studio photographers of the 1930’s. His subjects get full hair and makeup from his in-house stylist and then, in front of an antique white flat backdrop, Oristano poses his subjects.
The initial shots are done with a modern, digital SLR camera, to check for proper exposure, feel, light, etc. Only then does he bring out the classic 4×5 Speed Graphic which is a 1942 model from the U.S. Army World War II Signal Corps. Once the photos are processed, they can be scanned into computer files for final retouching in Photoshop and then, onto the printing process. Basic prints are 17×22, but much larger files are obtainable. To see more examples of his photos, visit www.hollywood1935.com.
