Police Cam
Seventy-five police officers in Derbyshire, United Kingdom are testing body and helmet cameras to film offenders as part of a trial. The footage taken from the cameras can then be used in English courts, which police departments there hope will catch more offenders and mean less written work for police officers. The Derbyshire Police force is composing a report for the Home Office on the equipment which could be used across England and Wales.
Police Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin remarked, “A picture paints a thousand words. [The cameras] allow officers to present the very best evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service to get convictions in circumstances where we don’t usually get convictions.” In recent years, security and police cameras in the U.S. have come under increasing attack by groups who see the devices as an invasion of privacy and who point to studies showing that police cameras do not always aid in a conviction when used as evidence in court.
