Not everyone can afford to travel the world, but happily, if you own a digital camera and any basic photo editing program (like Photoshop, for example), you don’t have to! You can edit your photos to show you standing in from of any background you choose—the Sphinx, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Louvre, the Grand Canyon, anywhere you like. It isn’t difficult and it’s a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

Start by using the Lasso tool to trace the edges of your subject or, if you have one, use an automated extraction tool then snap your extracted subject out of the context of the original photo, and copy and paste the subject on top of any photo you like. Pasting your kids next to the Mars Rover may give way to darker impulses however the next time you get annoyed with your boss. Go ahead and indulge yourself if that cheers you up—just remember how to press the ‘delete’ button afterward!
