Queensland Newsies Ask The Question About Speed Cameras

Is this about saving lives or making money?

That’s the grand universal question when it comes to speed cameras, and frankly, not a whole lot of people have the nerve to ask it.  Well, leave it to the Aussies for sheer nerve, because they just did.

An op-ed piece showed up in the Courier Mail not too long after Queensland’s top lawdog, Bob Atkinson, went on record as saying Queensland needed MORE traffic cameras to keep those nasty speeders from killing every single man, woman and child in Queensland, even ones that never leave the house, because speeders will go RIGHT THROUGH LOCKED DOORS to run you over.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t quite like that, but the spirit applies.  And Queensland journos let him have it, suggesting that the laws were in fact not stringent enough, and cameras should also be deployed for tail lights being out and bike messengers and everyone else.  After all, these were laws being violated too, and surely Queenslanders needed protection from those dangerous scofflaws too!

Either way, though, the question needs to be asked, and kudos to the Courier Mail for doing just that.
