Radio Telescopy’s Big Day Part One–The Square Kilometre Array
It’s both one of the largest scientific projects ever made, and it’s also going to be the world’s largest radio telescope. It’s called the Square Kilometre Array project, and it’s going to cost a whopping three billion in New Zealand money–by way of comparison that’s about two and a half billion in Australian money and just a tick over two billion dollars US.
Interestingly, the Square Kilometre Array will be a three-pronged effort on the part of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, all of whom are vying to host the array, but antenna sites will apparently be built in both New Zealand and South Africa.
The Aussie scientists aren’t trying to get a piece of the array, interestingly enough, just help get it built.
The implications behind having the world’s largest radio telescope are downright staggering, and could very well give birth to a legion of new scientific advancements, not to mention throw a little extra life into the economies of all concerned.
