Samsung Focussing on the wrong thing?

A rumor is being circulated that Samsung will offer a new, 12 megapixel camera phone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona Spain February 16th through the 19th. The move is being received with a chorus of boos and hisses by the world of online tech reviewers, who point out that when digital cameras first emerged on the market, the focus on higher and higher megapixel numbers turned out to be entirely unwarranted. Right now the highest number of megapixels that can be had on a cell phone camera is 8, but at least 5 or 6 of those are completely unnecessary.

Two megapixels is all you really need to snap a decent phot with a cell phone—anything more than that wastes memory. Even in the world of cameras, the quality of the images taken has more to do with the overall quality of the camera itself and the specific manufacturer. Megapixels only become an issue when you want to blow a photo up to a very large size, something almost no one ever does with cell phone photos.
