Sharp Announces Upcoming Launch Of Smartphone With Glasses-Free 3D Camera

Currently, Sharp isn’t too well-known in the smartphone market beyond Asia but they’ve just announced intentions to strengthen their influence with the upcoming launch of a 3D smartphone this year. They plan to utilize their their glasses-free 3D panels in the development of a new handset whose camera won’t require glasses for the 3D effect. Furthermore, it may be likely that Sharp’s parallax barrier displays will be able to provide the same glasses-free 3D capability that Nintendo is featuring in their portable, 3DS game console.

So far, it seems that major smartphone brands like Apple and the Android haven’t dared to promise 3D capacity for their mobile units. Thus, Sharp could be onto something with this concept if they can actually pull it off. However, as consumers, we have to consider whether or not we’d really want to have 3D functionality on our mobile phones. Such a new feature probably won’t come cheap.
