Sony DCRDVD650 Camcorder Review–A High Tension Camera

Strange thing to say about a camera, I know, but it’s also the most fitting term for such a camera as the Sony DCRDVD650.

The Sony DCRDVD650 is a camcorder that burns direct to DVD or offers the option for SD cards.  Further, it offers the ability to capture video to DVD; DVD-R/-RW/+RW and +R DL (Dual Layer), a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens; a 60x optical zoom, a 2000x digital zoom, a 2.7-inch wide touch panel LCD display, one touch disc burn capability; and a USB 2.0 interface.

There’s plenty of stuff here, and considering that it retails for three hundred dollars (depending on where you shop) it’s not like you’re getting a BAD deal.  But the downside is that this camera is seriously difficult to use.  I had a rough time getting anywhere with the menu systems, and frankly, I couldn’t even get the stupid thing to let me use the zoom without putting in a blank DVD.

I found the Sony DCRDVD650  to be an incredibly finicky system, despite the dizzying array of options it offered. If you can get past the learning curve–and you might have an easier time of it than I did, not to mention more time to get used to it–then you might have a good camcorder here.
