Sony DSC-S600 Review

The Imaging Resource has just put up a review of Sony DSC-S600 a recent entry level addition to Sony’s ever popular subcompact digital cameras. The 6MP camera with a 2 inch LCD is a perfect option for the beginners, however the more experienced shooters should stay away from it due to its limited functionality. The images produced are of good quality even in 13x19 inch prints, however ISO 400 images tend to be soft and there is a noticeable image noise too in 8x10 prints. It has an extremely attractive design and accurate focusing but one cant help but notice "tight" optical viewfinder and high barrel and pincushion distortion.
The Sony S600 has a 6.0-megapixel CCD and an all glass 3x optical zoom less which has a focal range from 5.1-15.3mm however the camera lacks a separate Macro Mode. The Sony S600 sports a real-image optical viewfinder and a 2 inch LCD screen .It also makes use of a Multi-Metering mode to determine exposure and White Balance settings include Auto, Daylight, and Cloudy, Fluorescent, and Incandescent modes. There is a handy picture mode too which offers images in sepia or black and white and other modes include Forced, Suppressed, Auto, Red-Eye Reduction, and Slow-Sync. There is the now standard Movie recording mode too where videos can be captured at 30fps or 16fps.It has an internal 32 MB of memory which can be extended by SD cards and it powered by two AA-type batteries.
Imaging Resource in the end concludes by saying “the Sony DSC-S600 is versatile enough for a wide range of shooting conditions, has good shutter response (particularly if prefocused), and enough shooting modes to satisfy most consumers. Not a bad choice by any means, but we feel most users would be better served with somewhat lower contrast and a bit less optical distortion at maximum wide angle and telephoto focal lengths.”
