Jim DeLillo is an exclusive photographer for iStockphoto and has added a new niche to his portfolio. As a resident of Oakland, NJ, DeLillo uses remote telescopes located as far away as Australia and New Mexico a to see the heavens. The objects he photographs may be millions of light-years away. To achieve this DeLillo subscribes to several services including Lightbuckets.com and Global-Rent-Scope.com. These places rent time on large computer-controlled telescopes in areas somewhat protected from light pollution and are available to anyone.

To create his photos, DeLillo logs on to his computer at home, and thru a web interface and directs the telescope to the object he is interested in. He then selects the point in the sky, the color of the filters, and the time of the exposures. The telescope is guided to stay directed at the object during the entire exposure with a range from minutes to hours, and some may even span several nights. “The work doesn’t stop there. The individual frames, currently in black and white must be calibrated, stacked, combined, converted to color, and enhanced to make the final work of art,” says DeLillo “The result is sensational images of galaxies, nebula, and starfields in vivid color.
