San Jose Cops Get Their Cameras
Well, for those of you who think that the cops are not to be trusted (and there are a LOT of you out there in varying shades), you’ll likely remember when we announced last month that the San Jose Police were going to be getting ear mounted cameras. Well, they’ve officially rolled out, but official comment on the devices has been somewhat slim on the ground.
The crew out at Taser International, who has come under a LOT of fire in recent months for their namesake device being used improperly on a number of occasions, shelled out a whole pot of money–seventeen hundred bucks per officer and a ninety nine dollar per month fee for same–to give officers headset-mounted cameras that look a lot like Bluetooth headsets.
Also called “bobbie cams” for their extensive use in Great Britain originally, the cameras are designed to reduce “escalating violence” in the San Jose Police Department, who has recently come under fire for alleged abuses of power. Indeed, there’s nothing like a constantly-on camera to keep most anybody honest, and they shouldn’t get in the way too badly either being headset mounted.
Some may say it’s shameful to mount cameras on cops. I agree. More specifically, I say it’s shameful that it’s necessary.
