The Classic Holga Camera Gets An Update
Have you ever heard of the Holga camera? Personally, I know I haven’t. But according to Gizmodo, this is a classic and well-known camera with quite a cult following. Interestingly enough, this cheaply-made device is actually packing plastic lenses (something I’ve never heard of on a real camera). However, this infamous camera is now getting an update from the previous model, which was created by Saikat Biswas.
Furthermore, the updated model is known as the Holga D. (Holga Digital) and it’s got some unique specifications and a few of them sound pretty old school to me. Anyway, the camera features a last-gen full-frame sensor (instead of film), full manual controls with ISO and shutter speed dials and does not carry a rear LCD display at all. So, basically what the Holga D. offers is full manual control and basic user functions.
Nonetheless, like its predecessor, this updated model has the problem of “light-leaking” which leads to physical distortions in analog and digital distortions in digital form. But the reporter from Gizmodo who covered this story seemed to describe this issue fondly as a forgivable quirk. Of course, this camera is going to stand out among other models out there but it may still find an audience considering that the original version had a cult following.
