The Secret Cameras behind James Cameron’s Avatar



With the success that James Cameron’s Avatar has had, it may be perhaps time to get into the nitty gritty. And while we are all awed by the 3D imagery that the film showed, the credit goes to Concept Overdrive and the technologies that made all those effects possible. Apparently a lot of the work was done by 2 cameras: the Simulcam and the Virtual Camera.

Simulcam was the process of combining real world actors and sets with computer graphics actors and sets. On the other hand, the Virtual Camera contained a Concept Overdrive microcontroller which handled analog and digital inputs, sending them through an Overdrive system that sent them into the 3D graphics world.
